Poised in front of his computer, local businessman Scott Smolen sends an e-mail while his software finishes updating. He then checks an appointment on his tablet, packs up his laptop and heads out to see a client. To Scott, there’s little doubt that the latest technological innovations help him better manage his career. Years ago when he started his first business, the only tools he used were a lawnmower, a rake and his own two hands. Scott established his roots in the business world by cutting lawns in his hometown of Bowie. When Scott was in middle school, he started a landscaping business with one employee—himself—and no plans for expansion. He was just looking to make a few bucks before going back to school. By the end of the summer, the business began to take root in the community, and Scott envisioned for the first time a future for himself as an entrepreneur.
Over the next decade, the business grew strong throughout Bowie, Crofton, Gambrills, and Odenton. It had 25 employees and a long list of satisfied customers when Scott sold the company. The experience gave him a solid foundation for success as a businessman and allowed him to branch out to pursue other business opportunities and interests. Scott moved from Bowie to Piney Orchard and decided to pursue a new career in computer networking. Although he enjoys computers and networks, it lacked the personal element that Scott had come to enjoy as he built his landscaping business. After careful consideration, he decided to begin his career in real estate in 1999 with ReMax and has never looked back. Scott’s personal hobbies include going to the gym, boating and fishing, and spending time with his family. Scott often attends Arundel High School soccer, baseball and football games with his children. He also enjoys supporting the University of Maryland Athletic department. Scott is an avid hometown professional sports’ fan with allegiances to the Washington Redskins, Wizards and Capitals. During baseball season he watches both the Balitmore Orioles and the Washington Nationals with his two sons. You will not see Scott wearing the Baltimore Raven’s purple when he is out and about in Anne Arundel County.
A STRONG FOUNDATION
Scott credits his parents, Bernie and Judy Smolen, for giving him the support and inspiration to become the person he is today. As small-business owners themselves in addition to working full-time jobs in the teaching profession, they also taught him the right way to run a business: listen to what your customers want and treat them with respect. These simple but important lessons are at the heart of Scott’s business philosophy.
